BEEVILLE — Every full-time Beeville Independent School District employee is going to receive a $700 stipend, if...

If they surpass their 2011 attendance record.

“Last year,” Superintendent Dr. Sue Thomas told the BISD board at its regular meeting Monday evening, “the average attendance was 94.2 percent,” which was almost exactly the same figure for students.

“The stipend has to be earned; by law the district just can’t give away funds,” Thomas said.

The board, assuming all 550 employees will meet the goal, has allocated $385,000 for the stipends.

The vote was unanimous; board member Viola Salazar was absent.

“We’re able to do this because we have money left over from last year?” board member Matt Huie asked.

“Yes,” Thomas replied.

Employees on approved sick leave would receive a discounted amount.

Thomas told the board she was suggesting the one-time stipend because most district employees have not received raises in at least two years.

Thomas said she hopes to start granting raises next year.

Employees who earn the stipend will see it on their June paycheck.
