The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo began its 2012 scholarship season today as 72 Texas high school seniors were each awarded a $16,000 scholarship to a Texas college or university.

Among the 62 participating Area Go Texan scholarship recipients are: Ora Burns and Megan Gaitan of Bee County, Tyler Wiatrek of Karnes County, Joseph Gonzales of Live Oak County and Carolina Palomino of Refugio County.

The 72, four-year, $16,000 scholarships include an additional 10 awards given at large to eligible students within the 62 counties represented in the Area Go Texan Scholarship Program.

These scholarships are part of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of more than $18.8 million to Texas students. Since its beginning in 1932, the show has committed approximately $283 million to the youth of Texas.

The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo is a Section 501(c)(3) charity dedicated to benefiting youth, supporting education, and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. The 2012 show runs Feb. 28-March 18. For tickets and more information, visit
