Corpus Christi — The Christus Spohn Health System’s Volunteer Services Department is organizing New Year – New You – New Volunteer recruitment events at each of their hospitals later this month.

Volunteer leaders will be on hand to discuss opportunities, benefits and the joy of volunteering with attendees. The event date for Christus Spohn Hopsital-Beeville is today (Wednesday) from 1 to 3 p.m. in the main lobby.

Volunteers are an important part of Christus Spohn’s daily operation. Volunteers work in areas such as: information desks, surgery waiting, emergency departments, dietary departments, spiritual care, radiology, admitting, the Christus Spohn Cancer Center, nursery, gift shops, baby closet, education department and nursing floors.

It is estimated last year the Christus volunteers gave more than 178,000 hours system wide. If one multiplies that time by the going hourly rate for a hospital volunteer ($21.35), their service is valued at $3,801,645.05 – the equivalent of 85.6 full-time employees.

“It’s hard to imagine our hospitals without our volunteers. They are very much a part of our team,” said Marissa Carrillo, Christus Spohn’s director of volunteer services. “Patients and their families are very comfortable around our volunteers. They offer smiles, the understanding ear, comfort and the healing touch.”

Currently, more than 700 volunteers work at Christus Spohn hospitals. But, there’s always a need for more. All volunteers must pass a background and a reference check. Volunteers must also serve a minimum of four hours a week.
