The George West Cemetery Association (GWCA) board met on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. at the George West Dairy Queen.

Members are Glynis Holm Strause, president, Lamon and Elaine Bennett, Gladys Thompson, Violet Person, Larry Holm, Grace Wilson, Pauline Word, Kathy and Chuck Campbell, and Chris Caron.

The GWCA serves as a committee appointed by the Live Oak County Commissioner’s Court as set out in the deed by Mr. George West. Anyone who has lived in George West or in Live Oak County and claims George West as home may be buried in the George West Cemetery free of charge. A family may reserve five plots per family by calling Lamon Bennett.

In 2010, the GWCA in association with Unify to Beautify has undertaken a fund raising project to build a new entrance to the cemetery. This project has been deemed the Gateway the Cemetery project. An anonymous donor agreed to match donations up to $25,000. To date, 72 donors has given $12,912 toward this goal.

If you would like to make a donation to the “Gateway to the George West Cemetery” project, please send your donation to the Unify to Beautify in George West, P. O. Box 221, George West, TX 78022 in the name of the Unify to Beautify for the “George West Cemetery Gateway Project.” Donations and memorials to named loved ones will be acknowledged for tax purposes.

The GWCA also has moved forward to mark plots in the new section of the cemetery. Lamon Bennett, Larry Holm, Redgy Sullivan, and Jim Warren marked twenty-four plots with section numbers. Each plot contains ten burial plots for a total for 240 more burial sites. Bennett reported that 41 burials were recorded in the last 12 months.

The GWCA records are now on an Excel spread sheet and may be arranged by plot, surname, first name, date of birth or date of death. A USB port with this information is available to view or print at the Live Oak County Library in George West.

Those who wish to donate to the GWCA in memory of a loved one may send their check payable to George West Cemetery Association Memorial Fund, Attn. Mrs. Elaine Bennett, P. O. Box 457, George West, TX 78022.

Donations to the maintenance fund that is used to mow the grass, clear limbs, remove debris, and maintain the water well may be sent to Mrs. Pauline Word, P. O. Box 262, George West, TX 78022.
