REFUGIO – Mayor Ray Jaso was honored at King’s Park on Saturday, June 29.

The day was proclaimed “Ray Jaso Day” in Refugio, recognizing 41 years of service to the city.

Jaso thanked all who came to the dedication of a permanent marker and plaque in his name.

He recognized his “other family from City Hall” as well as his family members.

Mayor Joey Heard presented Jaso with a plaque praising him for keeping taxes down while encouraging economic development in Refugio.

Jaso noted that the first time he ran – for Place 3 on the council – he wasn’t intending to run for office.

“Time flies,” he said.

Refugio County Judge Rene Mascarro said Jaso helped him out when he decided to run for office.

Mascarro commented that Jaso’s 41 years in office accounted for all of Mascorro’s life.

Jaso said he was a simple, ordinary guy and that he still had a lot to do for the city and that he thoroughly enjoyed being mayor.

“The town of Refugio is fixin” to be a booming community,” Jaso said.

Jaso’s brother, Hernan Jaso, also praised his brother for his long service. Hernan Jaso is a former mayor of Goliad,

The plaque on the permanent marker stated “Commemorating Mayor Reynol “Ray” Jaso for 41 years of dedicated service to the citizens and the town of Refugio – Town Council 1972-1997, Mayor 1997-2013.

An honor guard opened the ceremony with the presenting of colors. The Honor Guard also retired the flags to conclude the ceremony.

Refugio Chamber of Commerce President Lenny Anzaldua told the crowd of about 30 people “Happy Ray Day!” and all who were in attendance enjoyed drinks and snacks at the park.
