The Woodsboro Lady Eagles played a two out of three series in the Area round of the playoffs against the D’Hanis Cowgirls. The Lady Eagles swept the series in two games by the scores of 12-2 in six innings, and 3-2 in eight innings. In game one the Lady Eagles scored early and often. In the bottom half of the first Ashley Barraza lead the game off with a double followed by a base on balls to Taylor Perez.

Toni Martinez would then launch an RBI double to plate Barraza. With two and one strike count Lady Eagle second baseman Kendall Wendland would hit a gap-per to right center for a two RBI triple. With a runner on third base Jamie Wilson would hit a sacrifice RBI to the second baseman. Wilson would once again own the circle, striking out three out of the next four Lady Cowgirls. In the bottom half of the second Madalynn Nixon would lead off with a single and move to second on a pass ball. Barraza would sacrifice Nixon over to third, T. Perez would then hit an RBI double to score the lone run of the inning. With the score now five to zero in the top of the third inning Wilson would give up one of two hits of the night, runner would eventually score on a sacrifice fly to the left field foul territory to make the score five to one. The Lady Eagles wasted no time in scoring, Wilson would pound out a single to left field. Courtesy runner Anna Vega would then move to second on a sacrifice by Kasye McCool.

Vega would score on a double to deep center field, just pass the out stretched arms of the out fielder, by Hannah Niemann.Niemann would later score on a Nixon double to right center making the score seven to one. The Cowgirls would once again come up short with Wilson owning the circle and the defense making the assists. The game would remain seven to one until the fifth inning. With two walks and D’Hanis second hit of the game would make the score seven to two. The Lady Eagles would waste no time as Jaimie Wilson would send out a message by hitting the ball out of the Floresville softball field making the score eight to two. With victory in sight Wilson would once again own the circle striking out 3 out of the last five batters D’Hanis would send to the plate in the top half of the sixth. In the bottom half of the sixth the Lady Eagles would score four more runs on four straight singles by T. Perez, Toni Martinez, Kendall Wendland, Kati Perez, a walk to Wilson and a two RBI single by Nixon.

With the score now 12 to 2, the mercy rule would end game one. Highlights- Homerun- Jamie Wilson, Triple- Kendall Wendland,  Doubles- Ashley Barraza, Toni Martinez, Kasye McCool, Hannah Niemann, and Madalynn Nixon, Ashley Barraza 2-4, 1R, Taylor Perez, 2-3, 1RBI,2R, Toni Martinez 2-4, 2R, 2RBI, Kendall Wendland 3-4, 2R, 2RBI, Kati Perez 1-4, 1R, 1RBI, Jamie Wilson 2-2, 2R, 2RBI’s, Kasye McCool 2-3, 2RBI, Hannah Niemann 1-3, 1RBI, Madalynn  Nixon 2-3, 1RBI. Jamie Wilson pitched a 2 hit game with 16 strikeouts.

Game two would be on Saturday May 4 in Floresville. The Lady Eagles would beat the D’Hanis Cowgirls in game 2 by the score of 3-2 to sweep the Area round of the playoffs. The Lady Eagles would strike first in the top half of the second. Jamie Wilson would garner a walk with one out. Anna Vega would courtesy run for Wilson, Kasye McCool would then hit an RBI triple scoring Vega from first.

With two outs Nixon would keep the rally going with an RBI single to score McCool from third, making the score 2 to 0. Once again the Lady Eagle defense and stellar performance by Wilson in the circle would keep the score at 2-0 till the bottom half of the fifth. The Cowgirls would single, collect two walks, and a Lady Eagle error to muster out a run. With the score 2 to 1 the Lady Eagles threatened to score in the top half of the seventh but just as the Lady Eagles had done all game, hitting the ball hard but right at the Cowgirls gloves. The drama would start to unfold in the bottom half of the of the seventh. The Cowgirls would score a run on a single, a bunt, and a close play with a collision at the plate to tie the game up 2 to 2. With the intensity in the air in the top half of the eighth inning Wilson would lead off the inning with a two strike home run over the center field fence to ease the tension. That would all the Lady Eagles would need to secure the victory.

Wilson would strike out two out of the next four batters and assist on the last play of the game as she calmly tossed the roller back to first baseman Martinez to make the third out. Highlights- Jamie Wilson hit an 8th inning homerun, Wilson also pitched a complete game with 17 strikeouts. Offensively for the Lady Eagles Ashley Barraza was 3 for 5 with a double, Kendall Wendland 2 for 4 with a double, Kati Perez 1 for 4, Jamie Wilson 2 for 3, 2R, 1 RBI, Homerun, “COOL” Kasye McCool was 2 for 3 with a triple, 1RBI, 1R, Madalynn Nixon 1-4, 1RBI. Also contributing to the team victory were Taylor Perez, Toni Martinez, Hannah Niemann, Anna Vega, Adriana Vega, Shelby Sheffield, and Caitlyn LePore.

The win puts the Lady Eagles into the regional quarterfinals. The Lady Eagles will face Center Point in a 1 game playoff at 6 p.m. Saturday, May 11, at New Braunfels High School. Please come out and support your Lady Eagles. Discipline, Dedication, Determination pays off, finish......no regrets!
