Seven Badgers and Lady Badgers competed at the regional Powerlifting meets, and despite losing several “core” seniors, Coach Bobby Perez feels confident in his future teams.

“I feel that the lifters competed well all season,” he said. “Everyone improved on their lifts as the season progressed. I was also able to witness a level of confidence being built by some of the first-year lifters who were a little intimidated at the beginning.”

Seniors Weston Block placed 6th and Austin Block 8th at the regional meet in Bishop on March 9. Sophomores Trent Enriquez and Jose Hernandez both placed 8th in their respective weight classes.

For the girls, sophomore Caley Jackson won 6th as did freshman Miah Jalufka during the girls’ regional competition March 2; sophomore Mari Alaniz got 10th.

“I’m excited about the years to come,” Coach Perez said. “I’m losing a core group of seniors on the boys’ side, but I had a solid group of freshmen and sophomores this year. On the girls’ side, I’m losing one senior and had two sophomores and a freshman lift at regionals.”

During the season, Coach Perez saw progress among younger lifters, and he hopes to capitalize on it next year.

“It’s always a slow start with the freshmen and first-year lifters,” he said. “I have them focus on proper lifting technique before adding a lot of weight. As the season progressed, most of the lifters made significant gains on all three of their lifts.”
