The Lady Bulldog softball team made a decision in early February to change things. They were determined to make a play-off appearance and set the tone in practice from the beginning. With a commitment to their team and a decision to put the team first, the Lady Bulldogs have put up a 19-5 season with a 9-2 district record as of Tuesday. The district season seems set to go down to the wire with the Ladies battling with Woodsboro and Falls City for exact play-off positions.

The team has used the leadership of seniors Kaitlyn Roberts, Briana Ruiz, Savannah Lopez and Haley Hinojosa to push them through the season. Juniors Sara Saenz, Haleigh Garcia, Callie Mallon and Keely Retzloff have added not only experience but energy to the team. With second year returners, sophomores Anissa Alvarez, Trina Guzman, Vanessa Stewart and Johni Escamilla, providing solid play in the season’s run at the playoffs. This season the team added freshmen Alexis Saenz, McKenzie Ruiz, Teresa Diaz, Carle Straube and Ashley Zamzow who have accepted the challenge of varsity level play and become an integral part of the team.

The team has embraced their strengths, worked to improve their weaknesses and supported each other’s roles as players this season. It has shown as the team has successful taken the field with a confidence that has shown throughout the complete lineup. In district, the team has only dropped games to Woodsboro while putting up “W’s” against the rest of the district. The team has used the field leadership of Lopez at short stop with the pitching confidence of Hinojosa to develop a winning lineup card. Taking care of the corners have been returner Escamilla and freshman M. Ruiz. Second base has been tended to by Mallon and A. Saenz has been quick and aggressive behind the plate for the Lady Bulldogs. Controlling center field this year is Garcia with B. Ruiz handling the left side and Straube tending the right. S. Saenz has made an impact this year as a successful DP for the team relying on her quickness and ability to be on either side of the plate. Rounding out a game day lineup is Roberts who has become the team’s utility player with her experience around the field she has been important in tending to duties both in the dirt and the grass The team has been successful in incorporating the running capabilities and bats of sophomores Vanessa Stewart, Trina Guzman and Anissa Alvarez in various situations. First year players, Teresa Diaz and Ashley Zamzow have been called upon also throughout the season to contribute to the offensive game of the Lady Bulldogs. Statistical highlights for the season to date include a team AVG of .358 and an OBA of .485 and a total of 198 runs scored.
