GEORGE WEST – The Live Oak County grand jury with Judge Michael Wilburn presiding, handed down nine indictments Thursday, Aug. 9.

Two co-defendants remain in custody on indictments each for possession of marijuana in the amount of 50 pounds or less but more than five pounds.

Aaron Joseph Birt, 28, of Grand Rapids, Minn., and Chad Bixby, 20, of Deer Rivers, Minn., were stopped for speeding through Three Rivers at about 2:55 a.m. May 22 by Police Officer Emmanuel Ambrose. The stop occurred at the intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and East Leroy Street.

The vehicle was traveling at 72 mph in a 45 mph zone.

Sgt. Clint Davis said the driver, Birt, was very nervous. So they were asked if they would be OK with a search.

The search revealed about 32 pounds of marijuna concealed in a compartment behind the back seat of the red 2001 Saturn.

Birt was in custody with bond set at $20,000. Bixby’s bond also was set at $20,000.

Three Rivers Police Chief Vance Roberts estimated the marijuana’s street value was about $16,000 in this area. But the value of the drug increases farther north.

Sheriff’s Deputy Joseph Shelton also assisted in the arrest.

Other indictments included the following:

Felix Castro III, 30, of George West, unlawful possession of a fire arm by a felon. New surety bond set at $6,000 over old bond of $5,000.

Robert Hinnant Collins, 71, of George West, driving while intoxicated, third or more offense.

Darren Nils Reyna, 27, of George West, driving while intoxicated with child under 15 years of age. Reyna is out on a $5,000 bond.

Sergio Cuellar, 53, of Brownsville, fraudulent possession of identifying information. New surety bond set at $11,000 over the old bond of $10,000.

Richard Olivares, 51, of Brownsville, fraudulent possession of identifying information. New surety bond set at $11,000 over the old bond of $10,000.

Edgar Alejandro Garza, 28, of Edinburg, possession of marijuana between five and 50 pounds. Bond was set at $15,000.

Rick Alan Larson, 52, Saint Paul, Minn., possession of a controlled substance, up to one gram. Larson was out on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. A $5,000 surety bond was set.
