Jose Guadalupe Aguilar Jr., 28, escaped from the Federal Correctional Institution in Three Rivers at about 8:15 or 8:20 a.m. on Friday, according to public information officer Maria Arviza.

“He was actually seen walking; when the staff tried to apprehend him he ran off,” Arviza said.

Aguilar, a Brownsville native, is described as a white male with dark brown hair and brown eyes. He is 5 feet, 6 inches tall and weighs 155 pounds.

He was serving a nine-month sentence for supervised release violation. He was originally sentenced to a 12-month sentence for making a false statement and representation in firearms records.

Aguilar arrived at the minimum security prison on April 25 and his projected release date was Oct. 23.

Arviza said the prison has a fence around it, but as a minimum security prison the prisoners are allowed to walk around. She said it was “strange” for him to be out walking the grounds when prisoners are typically driven to where they need to go.

Temperatures on Friday were recorded at 100 degrees and as of 3:30 p.m. Friday he had not been sighted or apprehended.

“We don’t have any indications that he would have a vehicle or anything,” Arviza said.

U.S. marshals and local law enforcement agencies are currently investigating the escape. Anyone with information that may lead to his arrest is urged to contact the U.S. marshals at 361-578-4932 or the Federal Correctional Institution in Three Rivers 361-786-3576.
