The Longhorns baseball team added two more district wins over the past weekend to remain atop the standings with two more weeks to play in the regular season. On Friday night, the Horns hosted the San Diego Vaqueros, and came away with a nine to one victory. The following day, George West traveled to Freer and snuck away with a tough ten to seven win over the Bucs. Friday nights game saw senior ace Derek Cantu pick up win number six on the season, improving to a perfect six and zero. Cantu pitched a complete game, striking out eight on the night, while giving up one run on four hits. At the plate for the Horns, Brady Jones went one for three along with three RBI’s. Longhorn outfielder Kody Mercovich went one for two with two RBI’s. Andrew Katfey also had two RBI’s on his two for three night swinging the bat. Both Lukas Barcak and Jeremiah Ferrell also scored two runs each for the Horns offense.
On Saturday afternoon in Freer, the Horns had a total of four pitchers step on the mound. However, it was Kody Mercovich who was credited with the win for coming in during the fifth in relief. Cantu picked up the save after holding the Bucs at bay to end the game, his third save of the season. Offensively, the Horns picked up ten runs off of 14 hits. Mikey Palacios had three RBI’s off of his two for four day at the plate, with both of his hits being doubles. Mercovich also had three RBI’s off of his three singles. Barcak added two RBI’s off of his one for three day at the plate. Seniors Enrique Nieto and Bobby Torres also scored two runs a piece for the Horns.
With the two wins, the Horns improve to eight to two in D31 play to remain in first place with four games remaining in the season. This week, the Horns will have their last home game (Parents Night) on Tuesday night as the host Skidmore-Tynan, before traveling to Taft on Friday.
