VFW Commander Richard Sanchez presented Arlen Fehner, retiring president of Woodsboro First National Bank, with a Certificate of Appreciation on Thursday, July 26, for his many years of support of Post 6290.

Arlen Fehner will not only be missed at the bank, but by the people of our community as well.

Thanks to everyone who returned the survey regarding the possible VA grant. The results will be used for the grant application, which must be turned in to Texas Veteran Commission before August 7. Decision on the approval will be announced in December.

The VFW Post 6290 members reminds everyone that there will be no bingo on Tuesday night during the month of August.

VFW bingo will start up again on Tuesday, Sept. 4.

In other veteran matters, questions have come up about Agent Orange exposure in Korea. Effective Feb. 24, 2011, extend the presumption of herbicide exposure to any Veteran who served between April 1, 1968, and August 31, 1971, and/or you were in a unit that the VA or the Department of Defense (DoD) has determined to have operated in an area in or near the Korean DMZ.

The VA will consider veterans for disability upon proof of exposure if the veterans were assigned to certain units in the or near the Korean DMZ. Contact a Veteran Service Officer for the listing of the units that the VA and the DOD have determined were assigned the Korean DMZ.

Orion International will conduct a hiring fair in Austin on Aug. 10. They are currently recruiting for Schlumberger trying to fill 50 Maintenance and Electronic Technicians.

They usually look for the pay grades between the E-4 to E-6, but do not count any Veteran out if they have extensive knowledge and skills in either he maintenance or electronic fields.

Diesel, heavy track, heavy wheel, and electronic techs MOS have always had a good shot of getting hired.

The employment positions will be located in South and West Texas.

The MTs and ETs usually start close to 60K and the equipment operators start close to 50K. For contact information, you may call Bob Gear at 512-936-6024 or email bobby.gear@twc.state.tx.us.

The next VFW meeting will be on Monday, Aug. 13, at 7 p.m.
