Tigerettes win four of six matches at tournament

SAN ANTONIO – Competing against Class 5A schools, the Goliad Tigerettes took fourth place at the San Antonio Wagner Tournament on Friday and Saturday.

The Tigerettes won their first four matches to reach the championship bracket. Goliad beat San Antonio Edison 25-23, 24-26, 25-22; defeated San Antonio Jay 25-13, 25-23; downed Wagner 25-22, 25-19; and beat San Antonio Southside 25-23, 22-25, 26-24.

The Tigerettes lost their final two matches 25-21, 25-23 to San Antonio Roosevelt and 25-17, 25-16 to Wagner.

“It was very exciting. There were some big schools over there,” said first-year coach Jess Morris. “I was very impressed with how we played and with the schools we beat.”

Middle blocker Avery Zamzow, who had 57 kills, 122 digs and 14 blocks in the six matches, was named to the all-tournament team.

Sydney Morris had 27 kills, 95 digs and 20 service aces. Ashtin Zamzow recorded 64 assists, and Mallory Bruns had eight blocks.
