There is a widespread misconception that the Texas independence movement began in 1836 with the fall of the Alamo.

Some presume the movement began in October 1835 at the Battle of Gonzales, so famous for the “Come and Take It” episode in which Santa Anna’s troops were quickly dispatched by Texian volunteers. Neither of these are accurate assumptions.
