KENEDY – Four men were killed in a crash involving three vehicles on the outskirts of Kenedy in the early morning hours of Monday, May 20.

According to information from DPS, the accident happened around 12:20 a.m. Monday at the intersection of State Highway 72 West and FM 1145, just outside the Kenedy city limits.

A westbound 18-wheeler driven by Kurt Norrell of Cuero was turning left onto FM 1145 from State Highway 72 West while a motorcycle driven was Phillip Batres, 28, of Eagle Pass was following the 18-wheeler. The motorcycle went down on its side and slid under the truck, according to information from police.

A 2012 Honda Accord, driven by Samuel Jackson, 24, of Dallas and carrying three passengers, was traveling behind the motorcycle and crashed head-on with the back end of the 18-wheeler. Three of the men died on impact and the fourth died at the scene while in the ambulance.

The three passengers were Alexander Smalling, 25, of Glenwood, Colorado, Joseph Solis, 25, of Dallas and Joel Rodriguez, 18, of Mission. Except for Smalling, all the men in the Accord were wearing seat belts.

Norrell was not seriously injured as a result of the crash, but Batres was transported by ambulance to Otto Kaiser Memorial Hospital for treatment to injuries.

Police say the motorcycle and Accord were both trying to pass the 18-wheeler on the left at the time of the crash.

The DPS trooper who investigated told a reporter with a San Antonio TV station that the car and motorcycle were traveling together and had allegedly just left a bar. He said that alcohol might have played a part in the accident.
