The 2013 A.C. Jones High School graduate missed last year’s meet due to a foot injury, but she will be heading to Detroit this weekend to compete in four events. The meet runs July 29-Aug. 1 in the Motor City.
The top four finishers at the recent national qualifying meet in Converse earn a trip to Detroit. Martin and her teammates, the San Antonio Blazers, a local club track team, qualified in four events. Erika will be jumping in the long jump and triple jump events. She will also run for the Blazers in the 4x400-meter relay and the 4x100-meter relay at the Junior Olympics.
“I am really excited about going again this year,” said Martin.
“It’s only two or three hours from Canada, and we might get to go there on the trip.”
Two years ago, Martin and fellow Trojan runner Tanner Treviño qualified and competed at the national event in New Orleans. The experience laid the foundation and the desire to make it back to the AAU track showcase at least one more time.
Martin has been training in San Antonio at least a couple of times a week. The four events will be tough, and she will be actively competing almost every day of the big meet in either preliminary heats and/or finals.
Erika finished fourth in the triple jump with a 35-6 effort, more than a foot short of her personal best, but still good enough to qualify. She placed third in the long jump, clearing and hitting the sand at 17-2. Her 4x100-meter relay squad placed fourth in Converse and the 4x400-meter foursome captured second place at the event.
Martin hopes to continue to compete in track at the college level. She has been invited to “walk on” at Texas State University in San Marcos. If she makes the team, a scholarship might become available to help with her education.
She hopes to study biology as a pre-med student with a minor in physical therapy. Martin graduated in the top 10 percent at A.C. Jones.
