On Saturday April 27th the Kenedy Lions hosted the Schulenburg Shorthorns in a non-district baseball warm up for both teams.

Schulenburg was co-champs with Hallettsville while the Lions were the co-champs with Port Aransas.

Schulenburg went in the second place slot and plays next weekend against the winner of Johnson City or Lago Vista.

The Lions now know they will play the winner of Center Point or Ozona which will take place on May 10th and 11th.

The Shorthorns would score 5 runs in the first two innings off starter Rolie Zepeda who had trouble finding the strike zone walking 5 in the first two innings and giving up 3 hits to bring in the 5 runs.

Zepeda would go 4 innings striking out 5 while walking 6 total.

Dominic Cruz would pitch two scoreless innings not allowing anybody to reach base while striking out 3.

The Lions would see the Shorthorns number 1 pitcher a junior Bludau who coming in had an era below a half run a game. The Lions would have Zepeda on third with no outs as he tripled to lead off the both of the first but would not score.

In the second a lead off walk to Eddie Villarreal would go no where. In the 4th inning the Lions would strike pay dirt finally as RayJ Garza walked followed by Villarreal’s walk. Kris Bryan would single to shallow right to load the bases with one out.

Sophomore Bryant Tiemann with two outs would deliver the 2 run base hit to left to score Garza and Villarreal and make it 5-2.

In the bottom of the 5th the Lions would plate two more runs as Zepeda would walk to start the inning and steal second and third.

Isaac Cruz would be hit by the pitch to make it first and third with 1 out.

Garza would go to the hole in between third and short to drive in Zepeda. Cruz would move to third on the throw.

Cruz would score while Villarreal was at the plate on a ball in the dirt to make it 5-4.

Villarreal would continue the inning getting hit by the pitch but would not advance past first.

In the bottom of the sixth the tying run would reach first as Tiemann would reach on the shortstops throwing error but again the Lions couldn’t move him around as they would line out to left and ground out to first to end the inning.

The game would be called in the top of the seventh due to the storms and lightning. In all it was a respectable showing by the Lions against a very good 2A team.

They are scheduled to play Ben Bolt on Tuesday but that is still not for sure due to the rain and the water covering the infield.

If not Tuesday they will play at home on Wednesday May 1st with a 7:00 start.

On Thursday there will be a 2A playoff game with Jourdanton playing Aransas Pass starting at 7:00.

The Lions will still look to play some more warm up games but nothing is set as of press time due to playoff between teams that are tied.

Playoff info will be posted on the school web site and also at
