The Pop Tab program is beneficial not only to the RMHC, but also in teaching children about volunteering.
The Pop Tab program assist with the cost of housing families with seriously ill or injured children that have to travel far distances to receive the necessary treatment.
Three Rivers resident Esperanza Guzman, is one of the families the Corpus Christi location has assisted over the years. Esperanza stated, “If it was not for the Ronald McDonald House, I would not have seen my daughter Jozlynn for the two months she was in the hospital after her birth, three months premature.”
The Pop Tab program is a simple and easy way to get children involved in philanthropy at an early age. The program also teaches recycling as well as fund raising.
Many wonder why just the tabs and not the entire can. The tabs are more hygienic, than the cans and easier to collect and store. RMHC in Corpus Christi has collection houses available to anyone interested in getting involved.
Librarian Debbie Ramirez began collecting the tabs on her own in October 2012, slowly the students began to add more weekly. As a reward she would take a photo of the students and hang them in the library. Word quickly began to spread through the campus newsletters. The school has collected a 35 gallon barrel of tabs.
Mrs. Ramirez invites anyone in the community wanting to participate to send the tabs with the students by May 15.
Mrs. Ramirez states “May 16, RMHC will be sending a representative to collect the tabs and to speak with the students to give them a better understanding of the program and other ways they can help.”
