Lady Bulldogs win consolation at tourney; beat West Oso

Junior Kelly Barker was the winning pitcher in the Lady Bulldogs 12-10 come from behind victory over the Corpus Christi West Oso Bears.

The Three Rivers Lady Bulldogs Softball Team traveled to Kenedy on Feb. 26 to participate in the Lady Leopard Classic. The Lady Bulldogs had three pool games on the first day, beating Jourdanton 3-1, falling to Karnes City 4-3, and tying Skidmore 7-7. Jourdanton won their last two games, knocking the Bulldogs out of the championship bracket.

In the consolation bracket, Three Rivers started off with Nixon Smiley and defeated them 27-1. Megan Cruz pitched a one hitter and Brittany Pullin had a home run. All of the starters had at least two hits and scored in the contest. Tamara Gonzales had two doubles in the game. Allison Dugger went 4 for 5, and Christen Lerma was 2 for 2 with four runs scored. Sarah Retzloff went 1 for 1 and 2 RBIs and Kourtney Salazar went 1 for 1. Lauren Storey had a triple. Other Lady Bulldogs with multiple hits were Kelly Barker, Lindsey Amman, Cruz, and Morgan Franke.

In the second game of the day, Runge defeated Banquete for the right to face the Lady Bulldogs. Three Rivers came away with the victory 12-4. Sarah Retzloff was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bulldogs. Allison Dugger was 3 for 3 in the game with a triple and two RBIs. Lauren Storey was also 3 for 3 in the game. Chelsie Gloor scored a run in the contest as did Kelly Barker. Brittany Pullin was 2 for 3 .

In the consolation championship game, Three Rivers took on Natalia and defeated the Mustangs 5-4. Natalia got a quick start, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Lady Bulldogs scored one in the bottom of the first as Allison Dugger scored on a hit by Kelly Barker. Natalia started off the second inning with two straight singles, but good defense got the Lady Bulldogs out of the inning. The Lady Bulldogs got two more runs in the second inning as Tamara Gonzales led off the inning with a single and scored on a Lauren Storey double. Storey then scored on a fielders choice by Chelsie Gloor. In the third inning, Barker led off the inning with a single to right, then scored on a Pullin double. Lerma then hit a hard shot to the Natalia shortstop who made a great throw to get Pullin out at home to end the inning. The score was tied 4-4 going into the last inning. With two outs, Kourtney Salazar hit a double to right center then advanced to third base on an error by the outfielder. Allison Dugger then knocked in Salazar as she beat out a ground ball to third base to end the game. Dugger was also named to the All-Tournament team in the Leopard Tournament.

Last Tuesday, the Lady Bulldogs took on 3A Corpus Christi West Oso and came from behind to take the victory 12-10. The Lady Bulldogs spotted the Bears two runs in the first with an error in the infield and a error on a missed fly ball in the outfield. It appeared it was going to be a long tough night for Three Rivers, but the Lady Bulldogs woke up in the second inning, scoring six runs off hits by Dugger, Barker, Lerma, and a double by Lindsey Amman. Tamara Gonzales had a double in the inning and scored a run. Lauren Storey also drove in a run and scored with a single in the big second inning. Barker did a great job of pitching in the middle innings holding the opponent to one run in the third inning and one other in the fifth after pitching a scoreless fourth inning. The Lady Bears managed one more run in the sixth to close the gap to 10-7 after the Bulldogs got two more runs in the fifth off Pullin, Amman, and Storey hits. The Lady Bears made a comeback in the last inning, scoring three runs to make the game tied 10-10.

In the Lady Bulldogs last at bat, Kelly Barker had a double to right field then advanced to third on a Lerma single. The next batter, Brittany Pullin then hit a deep double to the fence to score Barker and Lerma for the game winning RBI.
