James was born to Boyce Preston and Eda Marie Rygaard Franklin. He graduated from La Marque High School in 1959. He received his BS in elementary education from North Texas State University, his Master’s from Sam Houston State University, and his Administrative Certification from University of Houston. During college, James toured Europe with an Acapella Choir and sang with the Dallas Civic Opera.
On June 1, 1972, James married Joyce Schweinle McCain. He taught and drove a school bus route in Dickinson and served as umpire and President of the Little League in Goliad. After 10 years teaching in Dickinson, James began work in administration in Goliad, and later in Lockhart, Runge, Lexington and Yorktown. Retiring in 1998, James became a certified track official working meets in Texas and nationally. He worked part-time at Becker Vineyard (Stonewall) and for over 10 years he volunteered at the PBS-TV station in San Antonio.
James sang in the choirs at St. John’s Lutheran (Santa Fe), St. Peter’s (Ander), St. John’s (Goliad), Martin Luther (Giddings), St. Paul (Yorktown), and First Lutheran (San Marcos). He taught Sunday School, served on the church council, chaperoned youth group trips and assisted with Meals on Wheels.
James was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Boyce Preston Franklin, Jr. James is survived by his wife, Joyce, children Brent McCain (Stacey), Tracey McCain Keller (Darrell), Aaron Franklin, Elliott Franklin (Denise), and numerous grandchildren; sisters, Patricia Smith (Robert) and Joyce Charlene Ober, and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were on Monday, Oct. 8, 2012 at First Lutheran Church, 130 West Holland St., San Marcos, TX 78666. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to First Lutheran Church or CTMC Hospice, 1315 IH 35 North, San Marcos, TX 78666.
