On Aug. 19, Faith Lutheran Church held a surprise retirement party for Freida Hartzendorf, who is retiring after 49 years as a choir member and choir director for the church.

She was presented with a gift from the church council and a plaque from the choir and a box of cards and letters thanking her for her years of service.

Frieda took over the choir in January 1974 when Ernestine Roemer retired. Over the years, she has not only directed both the adult and junior choirs, but also acquired new robes for the children’s choirs, helped with Sunday School Singing, and kept the church up to date with the newest books and service trends, always careful to select music appropriate for the season and each Sunday and conscious that the hymns support the lessons each week.

Frieda attended Texas Lutheran (College) University, where she was active in the selective TLU choir as an alto and as a soloist in her early years.

Cindy Hilliard will be taking over as Faith Lutheran’s choir director.
