It’s early August, with heat advisories and 100-plus-degree temperatures every blessed day.

Regardless, football teams are already out practicing again, and schools are readying for the return of students and teachers.

In fact, Texas’ annual sales tax holiday weekend will be held this Friday through Sunday, when families can save money on most clothing, footwear and school supplies priced under $100.

If the relentless heat has got you down, and you’re searching for something fun to do, the Bee County Chamber of Commerce is hosting Summer Fest, a first-time gala at the Bee County Expo Center.

The two-day event begins Friday evening with Tejano bands Elida y Avante, Siggno and Los Palominos taking the stage.

It continues on Saturday with Bee Auto Specialty’s 6th annual Car and Truck Show setting up there from noon until 5 p.m., featuring sport compacts, antiques, hot rods, classics and other cars and motorcycles. Food and drink vendors and kids zone activities will be included.

Then that evening, Texas Country musicians James Lann, Bart Crow, Kyle Park and Kevin Fowler will close the festivities with “an awesome country concert,” according to Park.

The gate opens at 6 p.m. both days, and tickets can be purchased at the gate or pre-sale tickets can be bought at all Pantry stores, the Chamber of Commerce office, Texas Champion Bank, Scores Bar & Grill and Stone Creek Bar & Grill.

Music and auto aficionados, newcomers and visitors are sure to find something to please them. It certainly beats sweatin’ at home alone.
