Justice of the Peace Lorraine Lopez said a year and a half ago, the county was getting preliminary autopsies from the Nueces County Medical Examiners Office.
She said the process then became a 90-day wait to get the autopsy toxicology report and a signature by a doctor for the cause of death.
The cost of the autopsy service out of Nueces County ranged from $3,300 to $3,800 per autopsy.
But Winston Moore of Moore Funeral Home said he came into contact with another service: Central Texas Autopsy, of Lockhart.
Central Texas Autopsy charges a $2,100 fee, not including transportation provided by Moore Funeral Home of around $600.
It was noted that Nueces sometimes took 120 days to return a complete autopsy.
Central Texas Autopsy will return a cause of death in 24 hours and a complete report in up to four weeks.
Moore said Aransas Pass and Aransas County are going to Central Texas Autopsy for the service because they will “get reports back to us when we need them.”
Using the Lockhart service would save the county more than $1,000 per autopsy.
Commissioners unanimously approved using the Lockhart based service.
