Those attending worship this past week at St. Paul’s Lutheran in Karnes City were treated to a mission trip report from Alex Collins. Alex recently returned from a Crosstrails Expeditions sponsored trip to Costa Rica where with seven other youth from throughout Texas and Louisiana he engaged in conducting a Youth Leadership Camp, entertaining children in a Nicaraguan refugee camp day care, and several other ministry related projects conducted in cooperation with ILCO (the Lutheran Church in Costa Rica). Alex’s trip serves as a prelude to an invitation for members of St. Paul’s to embark upon a Crosstrails Expeditions sponsored inter-generational mission trip to Costa Rica in July 2014.

Pastor Collins tied the presentation to the gospel lesson, noting as Jesus freed the woman in the synagogue from what bound her, so he can free us from the heavy burdens that bend us low: guilt, shame, over scheduling, over busyness, etc. Jesus frees us to stand up straight and join in praise of God and service of neighbor. This weeks “up”: Straighten up!

St. Paul’s News and Notes: St. Paul’s will be participating in God’s Work Our Hands Sunday to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the ELCA. From 8:30-10:15 am, a “Table of Grace” providing a free continental breakfast for anyone who desires it will be set up at a to be determined spot in Karnes City; canned goods will be collected at worship that morning to stock the shelves of the Thrift Center Food Pantry; and the Play Set will be dedicated following the regular 10:30 am worship service. Women of St. Paul’s are collecting items for LWR School Kits and for the Physical offering at the Synod WELCA Convention this fall. The first of three Women of St. Paul’s Bake Sales (complete with locally crafted tamales) will be held on Sept. 14 from 8:30 am until sold out at the Kenedy Wal-Mart. All baked good donations are greatly appreciated.
