Jesus was using salt and light, two things that people were familiar with, to demonstrate to the crowds of people how a disciple of Christ should spread the good news. Salt was used to flavor and preserve food, but when salt has lost its usefulness and becomes flavorless, it becomes like a person who does not exude the love of Christ in their lives. If a seasoning has no flavor, it has no value. If Christians make no effort to affect the world around them, they are of little value to God and become worthless. Christians should not blend in with everyone else. Instead, they should affect others positively, just as seasoning brings out the best flavor in food. Likewise, believers are the light of the world. Disciples of Christ should shine God's light on this world. If believers live for Christ, they will glow like lights, showing others what Christ is like. Believers nurture that light by study of his Word, the Bible. Christians, be a beacon of truth, don't shut your light off from the rest of the world.
