Luke 9:51 tells us that ‘… [Jesus] set his face to go to Jerusalem.” This seems like a rather innocuous verse but it serves as the turning point in Luke’s telling of the Gospel. The narrative emphasis shifts from painting Jesus as a powerful prophetic figure along the lines of Elijah and Elisha and the other prophets of old, to sketching his path to the cross and beyond. This journey is so important that only a single-minded devotion will do.

Such single-minded devotion is called for as followers of Jesus on the way. Not an easy thing for many who being born into the faith, too often take it for granted. Too often rather than a way of being in the world, faith degenerates into a caricature of itself, a mere hedge against eternity, a form of “fire insurance”. Faith frees us and calls us to surrender our rights to vengeance and security. For freedom Christ has set us free. Free to love and serve in his name.

St. Paul’s News and Notes: A brief order of blessing and sending for Alex Collins was a part of the June 30 morning worship. Alex leaves July 6 on a Crosstrails Ministries sponsored mission trip to Costa Rica. St. Paul’s Quilters continue to meet every Monday at 9 a.m. All are invited to pick up a copy of Introducing the Missional Church.
