KARNES COUNTY – Karnes County Sheriff Dwayne Villanueva announced recently that the Karnes County Sheriff’s Office will be participating in the 2013 Click It or Ticket campaign during the week of May 20 through June 2.

“It is a proven fact that seatbelts save lives,” Villanueva said. “So from May 20 through June 2 Karnes County deputies will be out enforcing all traffic laws as usual, with an additional emphasis on seatbelt and child safety violations.”

Villanueva and all his staff are encouraging everyone to “Drive Texas Friendly!”

Information from the Texas Department of Transportation shows an increased need for Texas drivers to focus on safety.

Despite an increase in seat belt compliance, there is more work to be done with the lives of Texans at stake.

Initial TxDOT data from 2012 indicates traffic-related fatalities in Texas are up by 11 percent. In 2012, there were 3,400 fatalities due to traffic crashes across the state.

By Texas law, all occupants of a vehicle, including back seat passengers, must wear a seat belt. Each unbuckled occupant faces a ticket and fines up to $200, plus court costs. Last year, more than 21,200 seat belt citations were issued during the campaign.
