KARNES CITY – At the Jan. 13 regular meeting, the Karnes City ISD Board of Trustees approved the refund of overpaid property taxes.

“Regarding the refund of overpaid taxes, Section 31.11 of the Property Tax Code book states that if a taxpayer has to be refunded over $500, it needs to be approved by the governing body of the taxing unit,” explained Superintendent Jeanette Winn.

According to district officials, refunds happen from time to time for a variety of reasons including:

- A sale in property results in the title company paying one of the accounts, but the taxpayer has already paid his or her taxes.

- Some oil accounts end up being charged to the Karnes City ISD tax roll, but the district’s tax collector realizes they need to be charged to another nearby school district.

- A taxpayer pays their tax bill but then realizes their loan company should pay the taxes from an escrow account.

- A change order is received from the Atascosa County Appraisal District.

- Property that is taxed due to incorrect information from an oil company appraiser.
