Paul closes his letter to the Roman churches by asking them to greet the saints who had been sent to build them up and to beware of false teachers who would cause divisions among them. He warns the churches to turn away from those who serve their own appetites and base desires, rather than Christ.

False teachers oppose the doctrine of Jesus Christ and God’s purposes. They prey on those who lack mature faith and do not trust in Christ alone; therefore, believers must learn to discern truth from error. The only way to gain insight into the Wisdom of God is to study His Word – not just read it devotionally, but study it interactively. His Word speaks only to those who “take up their cross” and follow Him.

The minimal amount of time most believers spend in fellowship with the Lord should cause concern. Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, unless a kernel of wheat falls to the ground and dies, it remains only a single seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.” (John 12:24) This simple parable explains an enormous truth that needs to be learned and applied.

A kernel or seed must die (to itself) before it can sprout into new life. If it does not die, it remains a single seed and will not live up to the purpose for which it was created. Like the grain of wheat, Jesus died, that He might yield a rich harvest. Likewise, a Christian must also die to self, yielding to the Holy Spirit and abiding in Christ. There, his or her own will, strength and goodness are crucified, and he or she rises to newness of life, now wholly dependent on Christ and His glory.

Proverbs 2:1-7 says, “My son, if you accept my words and store up my commands within you, turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding, and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as for hidden treasure, then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He holds victory in store for the upright, He is a shield to those whose walk is blameless.”

Most people today think of God as love (which He is) and do not believe they should fear Him. But holy fear comes from the awesomeness of the God. It is a gift of God to all His children. Holy fear allows God’s children to reverence His authority, obey His instruction, and turn away from evil. It is the beginning of godly Wisdom, the secret of righteousness, and a characteristic of the people of God, in whom He delights.

Even Jesus demonstrated reverential fear of His Father by submitting to Him. He was willing to die on the cross, allowing all who come to Him for salvation the opportunity to join Him in new life based on Godly wisdom and justice.

When a person comes before the Lord, crucifying his or her own thoughts, reason, hopes, affections, cultural experiences, preferences, successes, failures, spiritual experiences, comforts, and religiosity, he or she learns to fully rely on God. Experience Christ firsthand, fellowship with Him, and be filled to abundance with the awe of God!
