The instant we trust Christ as Lord and Savior, He takes away our sin, guilt and shame, and we experience joy and a freedom we have not known before. This is Jesus’ promise of rest. In this context, “rest” means to stop our labor; freedom from oppression by the enemy; and peace of spirit.
When we are “born again”, we are like a new baby in its mother’s arms – without spiritual strength or spiritual power. Yet, we have great joy. This joy can slip away if we do not learn how rest is maintained.
Jesus commanded us to abide with Him. This requires us to consecrate ourselves completely – to cast all our sins on Christ and remain connected to Him. If we try to work out our own way in our own power, we will fail to overcome sin. That is why Christ’s Spirit is sent to indwell us – to give us victory over the enemy and sin.
The key is to completely surrender to Christ, taking His yoke and learning of Him – in other words, abiding in Christ. When a baby rests in its mother’s arms, it is not the resting, but the mother, that protects. In the same way, Christ does not give us rest apart from Himself, but when we surrender to Him, His divine love protects and blesses us.
To fully surrender is to obey as well as to trust. Many say this is too hard, too much effort, and “why bother if I am already saved?” But how hard is it for a baby to lie in its mother’s arms and sleep?
“Taking up His yoke” means putting our faith in Him and following His leading. When we walk with Him, our burden is light, and we experience the joy of fellowship with Him.
