The win improved the Tigers to 3-1 heading into their District 15-2A Division I opener Friday night at George West.
Quarterback Dalton Sturm had touchdown runs of 2 and 16 yards and running back Kersey Jones added an 8-yard touchdown run for the Tigers.
Goliad’s defense also go in on the scoring when Chris Gutierrez stripped a Mathis ball carrier of the ball and ran 16 yards for a touchdown.
Sturm rushed for 167 yards on 16 carries to lead the Tiger offense, which gained 282 total yards.
The Goliad defense recorded its second shutout of the season and limited the Pirates (3-1) to 126 total yards.
The game was delayed for 45 minutes early in the second quarter due to lightning in the area.
Goliad head coach John Mares said he was happy with his team’s ability to maintain its focus after the long delay.
“Counting halftime, we had about and hour-and-a-half delay,” Mares said. “It was a very good character-building game for our kids. It’s a credit to them that they got right back out there and got right back after it. I was very pleased with them.”
Mathis fumbled the ball six times in the contest and lost three.
Mares said there are still some areas he would like to improve this week before Friday’s district opener against the Longhorns.
“We need to clean our special teams up,” Mares said. “Other than that, I think we’re right on course.”
Mares said he expects George West to try to control the clock with its Slot-T ground game.
“They have always been a scrappy team,” Mares said. “When they play Goliad, it’s always a good ball game. Their coaching staff is new, but they’ve walked into the same system they’ve always been running. It’s going to be one of those games where we cut down on mental mistakes.
“They’re kids are always aggressive. It’s going to be a good ball game.”
The Longhorns improved to 1-3 Friday night with a 35-14 win over Three Rivers. George West lost to Bandera, Ingleside and Orange Grove before Friday’s win.
In other District 15-2A Division I games Friday night, Luling (4-0) hosts Marion (2-2) and Jourdanton (3-1) hosts San Antonio Brooks Academy (0-4). San Antonio Cole (1-3) is idle.
