COLOGNE – Five suspected undocumented immigrants were taken into custody and a McAllen man was charged with alien smuggling after a traffic stop Wednesday on U.S. Highway 59.

At 4:13 p.m., Goliad County Sheriff's Office Deputy Brandon Gall stopped a 1996 Ford Explorer headed northbound at Cologne for a traffic violation. When he approached the Explorer, Gall saw several people laying in the rear area of the SUV.

Sensing this was probably a case of alien smuggling, Gall called for assistance and Sgt. John Pape, Capt. Tom Copeland, Deputy Dale Tarkington and Deputy Randy Dvorak went to assist.

A total of six people were taken from the vehicle and it was determined that the five passengers were suspected undocumented immigrants. One was a Mexican citizen and the other four were from El Salvador.

The driver was Elam J. Salinas-Escoto from McAllen. All six were turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

Salinas-Escoto will be charged by USBP with alien smuggling. The others will be processed for deportation.

The vehicle was impounded. It was registered to the driver.
