Soon, much of Goliad County may be wearing T-shirts symbolizing Gonzalez’s gesture.
Liz Vaughan of T-Shirts & More By Liz has offered to donate all proceeds from sales of a T-shirt she designed along with Gonzalez’s family to raise funds for the junior varsity football player’s medical expenses.
Gonzalez sustained a brain injury in a game Oct. 17 in Yoakum and lapsed into a coma on the sideline. He was airlifted to an Austin hospital, where he underwent surgery to relieve pressure from his brain, remove a blood clot and repair a blood vessel.
Gonzalez was transported to an Austin rehabilitation facility last week.
At the Oct. 12 Goliad Rotary Club’s Hunter’s Ball, Trey Wimberly motioned that the proceeds raised from the auction of an autographed football by Bum and Wade Phillips be given to the Gonzalez family and the Rotarians agreed. The bidding went up to $1,000 and the Rotary Club contributed another $1,000. Members from the audience then began bidding to donate $100.
By the end of the night, $6,400 was raised. According to Goliad ISD Superintendent Emilio Vargas III, an additional contribution of $3,000 came in from Mr. and Mrs. Danny Nelson to make the total at $10,000.
The T-shirts will be on sale until Thursday. Order forms are available at all Goliad ISD campuses and at T-shirts & More By Liz at 407 W. Pearl St.
Oct. 31 has been designated Diago Gonzalez T-shirt day in Goliad ISD and all students will be allowed to wear a “Diago Strong” T-shirt.
