GOLIAD – The Goliad County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the case of a second Goliad man who was found dead in the city over the Fourth of July weekend.

At approximately 7:25 p.m. Friday, GCSO dispatched deputies to the 200 block of West High St., where they found 54-year-old Homer Maldonado unresponsive. Pape said witnesses told investigators Maldonado fell over a bicycle and was thought to be intoxicated.

According to GCSO investigator John Pape, witnesses said they put Maldonado on a bench beside a picnic table and left him there while they went to a grocery store to purchase items for a barbecue.

Pape said the witnesses returned approximately 20 minutes later to find Maldonado unresponsive. Goliad EMS was called to the scene and attempted CPR on Maldonado with no success.

Pape said there are no indications of foul play in Maldonado’s death, but an autopsy will still be performed.

Early Friday morning, the body of Christoval Lee Garza, 38, was found on Warrick Street near a grain elevator east of the Dollar General store.
