Dear Editor:

On behalf of Zaragoza Society President Edward Garcia its officers and members, allow me to express our sincere gratitude and appreciation for the tremendous support given to us on our recent Cinco De Mayo Fiesta Zaragoza.

The turnout was huge and the results were an asset to the hard work that was exerted by our members and all participants. Thank you from a very civic-minded organization that believes in our community and the education of our youth.

Our annual scholarship goal remains the same every year - “As much as we can make!” We present scholarships to as many students as possible with our goal of $10,000. We have been able to reach that figure several years and it looks as if we had another successful year for our students. All the expenditures for our fiesta haven’t been finalized yet, but it looks very good.

Reaching our goals wouldn’t be possible without the generosity of our sponsors who selflessly donate money, food, time, labor, personnel, and product. They all give us a huge start for our fiesta that, in turn, helps us kick off a successful annual event.

We would like to thank and recognize the following sponsors of the 2013 Fiesta Zaragoza and Queens Coronation:

Platinum Level (Los Generales):

H-E-B, L&F Distributors (Bud and Bud Light)

Silver Level (Los Tenientes):

Villafranca & Villafranca Law Firm

Medallion Level (Los Soldados):

Goliad Funeral Home, Bonilla & Chapa Law Firm, Aarons of Cuero, Grace Funeral Home, LULAC Council #21, Majic 95.9 Radio, City of Goliad, Goliad County, Texas Parks & Wildlife, Goliad Fair & Rodeo Association, Victoria Harley-Davidson, Goliad Calaveras Motorcycle Club.

To those that were not named, unintentionally, we thank you for your support and donations that helped us reach our goals.

Our thanks go out to the city and county crews that prepared the grounds for a beautiful scene of our fairgrounds. A generous thank you to the judges and donors of the cook-off competition and the margarita contest, the donations of the use of the Julie Wimberly building, T-shirt sponsors of the bike run, the many food vendors of the fiesta, the outstanding musical entertainment we had for two days, the 39 IBCA cook-off teams that competed and their winners, the ballet folklorico dancers of Goliad, the city staff and donors for their reception for our Hidalgo guests.

Hopefully, we haven’t missed anyone because you are all special to us.

Finally, we extend our gratitude to our visitors from Hidalgo, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and their Mayor, Guadalupe Jesus “Chuy” Rodriguez Lozano, and his wife, Yadira. Also from Hidalgo was the City Secretary, Guadalupe Lozano Padilla; Director of Education & Culture, Sylvia Margarita Lozano Garcia; Director of Human Resources, Maria Cadelaria Lazcano Regino; Director of Social Services, Luis Antonio San Miguel; Director of Public Accounts, Adalberto Martinez Lozano; Dance Instructor, Antonio Hernandez; Youth Coordinator, Cristian Omar Perez; and a number of cooks that provided a delicious meal for all Goliad visitors that came by.

After the meal, the highlight of the evening was a special presentation of a large patented asador (pit) used to cook the meal to Jay Harvey and a smaller pit to Hernan Jaso from Luis Antonio San Miguel, who has the patent on the design of the pits.

We also wish to recognize our 2013 Queen Toni Jo Garcia and her court:

Queen Zaragoza 2013 Toni Jo Garcia, daughter of Paul and Maresa Garcia, Junior Miss Zaragoza 2013 Isabel Torrez, daughter of Mayo and Paloma Torrez; Little Miss Zaragoza 2013 Arriana Segura, daughter of Anthony and Dina Segura; Little Mister Zaragoza 2013 Nicolas Tyler, son of Jeffery and Leann Tyler.

Former Zaragoza Queen, Lupita Silva Barrientos, was chair of the dancers and Queens Coronation. The display of their colorful dresses and ragalia was awesome and will be used to represent Zaragoza Society throughout the 2013-2014 year.

My personal thanks to all the committee chairs and officers of Zaragoza Society that spent countless hours at the fiesta site ensuring that all the details were covered and ready to offer a fantastic event. President Edward Garcia presented Lionel Garcia with the Member of the Year Award and thanked all members and chairs of the bar, security, bike run, raffles, queen’s coronation, folklorico dancers, margarita, IBCA cook-off, meal and social reception committees.

Everyone is to be commended on a job well done. As always, we thank those local non-member citizens that took the time to come out and enjoy the Cinco De Mayo Fiesta in Texas.

Hernan Jaso,

& Event Coordinator,

Zaragoza Society
