ANDER – Sarah Brandes has been named youth sponsor for St. Peter’s Lutheran Church.

In this volunteer position, Brandes will provide leadership for the congregation’s youth ministries and partners with other education and youth leaders to strengthen and grow St. Peter’s ministry with and for youth.

St. Peter’s offers three new youth groups: God’s Little Critters for preschoolers, G.A.M. (God’s Angel Minions) for elementary and intermediate youth, and the Dually’s for middle school and high school youth.

“Sarah is such an asset to our Christian education committee and youth groups,” said Lana Jarzombek, chair of St. Peter’s Christian education and youth ministry committee. “She has a wealth of knowledge to share with youth. She has a way of incorporating fun and fellowship with activities, and the kids don’t always realize they are actually learning while having fun at the same time!”

Brandes is a 2006 graduate of Texas Lutheran University, where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology with a concentration in youth ministry. She served on the staff of Salem Lutheran Church in Brenham as director of youth and family ministries and also recently served as a fourth-grade teacher in Victoria.

In addition to the three youth groups, St. Peter’s also encourages youth to attend summer church camp and provides 75 percent of the cost of camp for member youth. Younger members also have the opportunity to attend regional middle and high school youth gatherings and the national youth gathering of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, which will be held in 2015 in Detroit.

Youth also serve frequently as worship leaders at St. Peter’s, serving as lectors, communion assistants, acolytes, ushers and greeters. St. Peter’s constitution provides for the election of a member to the congregation council who has not reached the age of 18 at the time of election.

“St. Peter’s is blessed to have a person with Sarah’s background and expertise serve as youth sponsor,” said John Dellis, minister. “We look forward to the additional opportunities for learning, witness and service that will be available to the youth of St. Peter’s and youth from the community who wish to participate.”

St. Peter’s is located at 1545 E. Farm-to-Market Rd. 1961. Worship is at 9 a.m. Sunday mornings. For information, call 645-2922 or visit
