SKIDMORE – The visiting Taft Lady ’Hounds brought their big bark with them on Friday night as hitter Caitlyn Guajardo racked up a match-high 24 kills in putting away a 3-0 volleyball win over the S-T Lady Cats on Friday night.

The tall and talented Guajardo was called on to kill every Lady Cat uprising, and she did just that. The S-T girls were competitive, but the Taft girls called on Guajardo time and time again to put a point on the scoreboard. The first set was a 25-14 set win for a 1-0 ’Hound lead in the best of five set match. The second set had the two teams battling evenly through the first few minutes. A series of short Taft runs began to take its toll from a 9-9 tie.

The visitors hit for three straight points to go up 12-9. The lead kept inching further and further away from the S-T squad. The final score in set two was 25-17 for the Taft girls as they increased their lead to 2-0.

The third set was all Taft as the previous short runs became long runs. A 10-0 spurt put the Taft girls in front 18-6, and the end was in sight. The final in set three was a dominating 25-11 win.

The loss puts the S-T girls at 10-16 on the year and 4-7 in district play. Taft improved to 26-10 and 9-1.

“Tonight we competed. In the last couple of weeks we have grown by leaps and bounds and have turned the corner,” said S-T head coach Tim Stowe.

“If you compare us now to a month ago, we are much better. It’s what you want as a coach.”

The Lady Cats got nine kills from Amy Berthold and four kills from Amanda House. Charli Perron set up 11 teammates for points to lead the squad in assists. House added two blocks along the net for the Lady Cats while Isabel Jimenez contributed one block for the S-T defensive effort. Perron served for two aces over the three sets.

“Our back row was consistent tonight with their passes. Over the past three weeks, we have become a lot more solid in our passing and serve-receive game,” said Stowe, “which is great.

“We have three big matches left this season. We will keep working hard and getting better.”

The Lady Cats played host to Odem on Tuesday night. They will have a bye this Friday night before traveling to Banquete next Tuesday. The Lady Cats end their regular season by hosting Freer on Oct. 29.
