Johnny and Dorothy Smejkal of Beeville will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary this Saturday.

The couple were married Nov. 9, 1963, in Victoria at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Dorothy is the daughter of the late Victor and Leona Weber, and Johnny is the son of the late Frank and Rose Smejkal. A reception, dinner and dance was held at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Victoria after the ceremony, and the couple honeymooned in New Orleans, La. The bride designed and created her own wedding gown and veil as well as the bridesmaids’ dresses.

The Smejkals have five children: Brian (Cary) Smejkal of San Springs, Okla., Janet (Mike) Smith and Jim (Tiffany) Smejkal, both of San Antonio, Daniel (Terry) Smejkal of Tulsa and Karen Smejkal of Houston; and 13 grandchildren: Jackson, Hilary, Bethany, Evan, Dylan, twins Madison and Mason, Hayden, Logan, Rosemary, Morgan, Thomas and Nathan.

This weekend, their children and grandchildren will gather with them at the home of Janet and Mike in a celebration tribute to commemorate their golden anniversary. The celebration will include a south-of-the-border fiesta and a memorable slide show featuring highlights of their married life.

An early celebration took place in August when the couple flew to Seattle, Wash., and boarded the cruise ship Star Princess for an unforgettable and scenic Alaskan cruise, stopping in Juneau, Glacier Bay, Skagway, Ketchiken and Victoria, BC. Following the cruise, they spent three days in Seattle taking in the attractions and trying the cuisine before returning home.

Via St. Joseph Catholic Church, Johnny and Dorothy have received a beautiful and privileged Papal Blessing document certifying that Pope Francis has bestowed his apostolic blessing on them as a gift. The blessing is given to couples who have been married for 50 years or more in the church.
