Pioneers! oh Pioneers!

The official name of the cemetery is “Evergreen”; many call it “Pioneer.” Bee County commissioners established it in 1852. According to a list published in the Bee-Picayune in 1967, it is the resting place for 322 souls. The Eidson family seem to be the first, buried the year the cemetery was established, although one family member’s grave may read 1845. But, with at least 18 headstones without a burial date, who knows for sure? The landscape is decorated by huisache daisies — the official county flower. And, like it was in the beginning, the call of mockingbirds break the silence.
