Irene Snelling, a longtime resident of Alice, died Tuesday, July 31, 2012, at the age of 88.

Irene was born December 7, 1923, on the family farm on the Medio Creek near Beeville. A child of the depression, she was the third born to pioneer Bee County farmers Lawrence A. and Minnie Robinson Grover.

Her siblings, Johnnie Lorraine Wolf, Lawrence “Jr” Grover and Howard “Bill” Grover (killed in WWII), all preceded her in death. Also preceding her were her husband, Theodore A. “Blackie” Snelling and a daughter, Darylene Hunter.

A baptized Catholic, she attended St. Joseph Parochial School in Beeville. In later years, she worked in the cafeteria of St. Elizabeth Catholic School in Alice.

Following the death of her husband, she worked as assistant manager of Gibson Discount Center in Alice during the late 1960s. After 27 years of managing the Capri Motel in Alice, she retired in 1996 to spend her last years on the family compound North of Alice.

Survivors include her son, Ted (Cheri) Snelling, Jr. and daughter, Laura (Russell) Taplin, all of Alice; 5 grandchildren, Allen (Laura) Hunter of Calallen, Reagan (Jill) Taplin of Seattle, WA, Skye Costley and Cyndy Taplin of Corpus Christi and Ted (Amanda) Snelling, III of Calallen; 5 great-grandchildren, Noah Garcia, Lauren Hunter, Elaine Hunter, Madison Snelling and Willow Costley.

Rosary was recited at 7 p.m. Sunday at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services were slated for 10 a.m. Monday at Holmgreen Mortuary Chapel. Burial followed at the Alice Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Allen Hunter, Reagan Taplin, Ted Snelling III, Noah Garcia, George Terrell III and Tommy Sealy.
