GWJV volleyball begins promising season

George West Junior Varsity Lady Horns Volleyball is off to a great start as the 2012 season begins. Coach Tamara Bednorz has helped lead the Lady Horns in a current 5-3 record.

On Aug. 14th the Lady Horns faced Pleasanton falling short in a close battle. Digs were led by Brittney Mathis with three, followed by Jordan Hensley two, Aspen Hallam two, and Kendra Cantu one. Cassie Cantu, Mathis, and Hensley contributed with three successful kills each. Ciara Lillie, and Blake Mosley each had one kill. Hallam with two assists followed by Mosley with one assist. K. Cantu led the team with positive serves having two aces and Mosley one.

The Lady Horns also fell short against Devine in three games. Digs were led by Hensley with eight, K. Cantu five, Elida Cuevas three, Hallam, Mosley, and Briana Salazar followed with two digs each. Mathis one dig. Kills led by Hensley with three, Mathis and Salazar two, Mosley, C. Cantu, Lillie, and K. Cantu one kill each. Assists led by Mosley and Hallam with two each and Salazar one. Lillie led blocks with four, followed by Salazar with one. Mosley led the team in positive serves with one ace.

On Aug. 21st in a dual match the Lady Horns successfully defeated Kingsville Academy. Salazar led the team with six kills followed by Mosley and Lillie with three kills each. Hensley and Sara Reyna had one kill each. Mosley led with seven assists followed by Hallam three and Cuevas two. K. Cantu led the team in positive serves with four aces. Hensley, Reyna, and Mathis had two aces each. Mosley, Salazar, and Hallam one ace each.

Lady Horns defeated Ingleside with continued success in the dual match held in Kingsville. Lillie led the team in kills with four, followed by Mosley three, Salazar and Mathis had one kill each. Lillie contributed with one block. Mosley led the team in positive serves with six aces followed by Hensley with three. Reyna, K. Cantu, Mathis, and Cuevas all with one ace each.

On Aug. 24th the Lady Horns were named Champions of the consolation bracket in the Carroll Tournament after opening short against Gregory Portland. Following the initial defeat, the Lady Horns maintained success the remainder of the tournament. Against Kingsville Hallam led the team in digs with two followed by Hensley and K. Cantu with one each. Kills were led by Hensley with three, C. Cantu and Lillie both had two kills each. Mathis and Mosley one kill each. Hallam and Mosley led the team in assists. Mosley led the team in positive serves having one ace. Hallam and Mathis had two aces each. Hensley, K. Cantu, and Cuevas with one ace each.

As the tournament continued Alice fell to the Lady Horns. Mosley and Hensley led the team in digs with one each. Mathis led kills with six followed by Hensley and Lillie with three kills each. Mosley and Hallam one kill each. Lillie two blocks followed by Mathis with one. Mosley led the team in positive serves having one ace. Hensley and Mathis contributed with two aces, K. Cantu, Hallam, and Cuevas one ace each.

Winning the consolation bracket was solidified when the Lady Horns defeated Incarnate Word Academy. K. Cantu led digs with two followed by Hallam with one. Kills were dominated by Mathis with seven followed by Mosley and Lillie with four each. Hensley had three kills. Reyna and C. Cantu had one kill each. Mosley and Hallam led the team in assists. Mosley led the team in positive serves having four aces. Mathis and C. Cantu had three aces each. Cuevas had one ace.
