Dr. Michael Dewey DuBose, 30, died Sunday, May 11, 2014, in Beaufort, South Carolina.

Dr. DuBose was born June 18, 1983, in San Antonio. He was born again in January 1999 when he accepted Jesus as his Lord and Savior at First Baptist Church in Beeville. He was a sixth generation Master Mason and a life member of Victory Lodge #1160 as well as the Alzafar Shrine, both in San Antonio.

He graduated from A.C. Jones High School in 2001 and earned his bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. He pursued postgraduate studies at Pennsylvania State University, where he completed an M.A. in 2008 and a Ph.D. in 2013, both in American literature. While at Penn State, he won a Bunton-Waller Fellowship and the Philip Young Memorial Fellowship in American Literature. He had just finished his first year of college teaching as a visiting assistant professor at the University of South Carolina, Beaufort.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Howard and Ruby Lee Dunn and Ernest and Sheba DuBose.

Survivors include his mother, Lori DuBose of Beeville; father, Dewey DuBose of Yancey; a brother, Justin DuBose of San Antonio; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, May 20, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Beeville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Michael DuBose Memorial Scholarship. Checks can be mailed to Eva Cisneros, BISD, 201 N. St. Mary's, Beeville, 78102.
