Dehnert captures District 30-4A tennis singles crown

VICTORIA – Trojan Eric Dehnert captured the district championship in boys’ singles on Wednesday, defeating Thomas Hackett (Calallen), 6-4, 6-2.

Going into the district tournament as the second seed, Dehnert fought his way to the gold medal round and soundly defeated No. 1 seed Thomas Hackett (Calallen). Dehnert had only two losses this season, and one of them was to Hackett back in October. In getting to the finals, Dehnert defeated Thomas Baugh (Calhoun), 6-2, 6-3, and Trace Meadors (Calallen), 6-3, 7-6 (8-6).

This win gives Dehnert six consecutive gold medals this season and his second district crown in as many years. He will compete in the regional tournament being held at Blossom Athletic Center in San Antonio next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Lady Trojan Cori Moore will join Dehnert at regionals after placing third in girls’ singles. Moore defeated Johanna Kner (Victoria East) in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 6-0, but lost to No. 2 seed Sarah Moses (Calallen) in the semis, 6-1, 6-0.

Moore bounced back to capture the bronze medal on Wednesday, defeating Sami Enderie (T-M), 6-0, 6-2. Moore will be returning to the regional tournament for the second year in a row.

Other Trojans competing in the district tournament include:

Emily Barris and Graham Traylor. The Trojans mixed doubles duo won their first round match against Ben Sartor and Yessenia Martinez (Victoria West), 6-0, 6-1, before falling to Jacob Reinhard and Justine Borchard (Calallen) in the quarterfinals, 6-3 7-5.

Roberto Reyna and Colton Wren were defeated in the first round of boys’ doubles by Colten Gimler and Dylan Kostroun (Calallen), 6-3, 6-2. Cori Sparks and Paige McKinney lost in the first round to Kayla Garcia and Sydney Terrell (T-M), 6-3, 6-3. Samantha Ramon lost her first round match to Teresa Wang (Victoria East), 6-4, 6-0. Tyler Stewart lost a tough first round match to Jonathan Dietzel (Victoria East), 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-4.

In the freshman division, Lucas Guerrero and Karla Martinez won the gold medal in mixed doubles, defeating G-P, 6-0, 6-0. Emily Carabajal and Miranda Cardenas captured the bronze medal in girls’ doubles.
