BEEVILLE – Information is still sketchy regarding an early afternoon accident that killed a 43-year-old Montgomery man and sent a Beeville man to the hospital with third degree burns.

Texas Department of Public Safety authorities in Laredo said 28-year-old Joel James Treviño of Beeville suffered burns on about 75 percent of his body after the 18-wheeler he was driving in LaSalle County was struck by a pickup truck at about 1:34 p.m. Wednesday.

Treviño was reportedly stopped at the intersection of State Highway 97 near Cotulla attempting to turn west onto SH 72 when another 18-wheeler, driven by 43-year-old David Cole, disregarded a stop sign. Cole was traveling west on U.S. Highway 72 at the time. His truck hit a pickup driven by Roberto Ochoa of Mission.

Troopers did not have an age for Ochoa.

The trooper investigating the accident said Ochoa’s 2005 Chevrolet pickup struck the vehicle Treviño was driving, causing the vehicle to explode and burn on impact.

Cole was pronounced dead at the scene and Treviño was rushed to an unnamed hospital for treatment of his burns.

Ochoa was not injured.

DPS personnel said the accident was still being investigated Thursday afternoon and a completed report had not yet been submitted.
