Unlike the traditional mariachi, Las Alteñas is an all-female group that is making waves across the United States. Their mission is to achieve excellence as overall musicians and performers and to raise the standards for women in mariachi music.
This prestigious mariachi is under the direction of Valerie Vargas and consists of 13 members, with ages ranging from 18 to 27. Las Alteñas has a complete instrumentation, which includes six violins, three trumpets, a guitarrón, vihuela, guitarra de golpe and guitar, creating a full mariachi sound.
Spectators are impressed not only with the musicianship, but also with the group’s stage presence. Choreography plays a major role in their performances, as does interacting with the audience. Their signature colorful Trajes de Charro and vocal harmonies draw abundant crowds to their performances, which are featured in three popular restaurants in San Antonio.
The women that make up Las Alteñas are a stunningly beautiful group of musicians who are clearly proud of their Mexican heritage and eager to share it. Their name is taken from the mountainous area in Jalisco, Mexico. Las Alteñas are from an area described as being near the top of the world, and fans say these ladies are up there!
Celebrating 10 years as “Texas’ Finest Female Mariachi,” Las Alteñas is already considered one of the genre’s premier all-female groups. Not only do they perform all over San Antonio, but they travel around the country. They’ve played in mariachi festivals in San Diego, Calif.; Hollywood; Topeka, Kan.; Fort Worth; and Little Rock, Ark.
At the 2005 Annual Go Tejano Mariachi Competition in Houston, they proudly brought home first place. Production of their new CD is currently in the works.
