Friday night promises to be an unusually exciting time in this community.

In addition to the “Friday night lights” as high school football teams return to area stadiums, Sept. 20 marks the opening of dove season in the South Zone.

Those hunters willing to brave the tropical showers and mosquitoes hope to fill their bird bags with whitewings and mourning doves, as well as harvest their limits in good times, including meals, beverages and stories around the campfire with friends, many traveling here from other cities and states.

However, in addition to those favorite pastimes, Police Chief Joe Treviño and the Beeville Police Department are joining with Solid Knockout Promotions in presenting the first ever Friday Night Fights at the Bee County Expo Center.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the first bout will take place about 7:30. Eight boxing and mixed martial arts fights are scheduled on the card.

Treviño is hoping to see a large crowd turn out Friday night to show support for local amateur boxer Robert Serna, who will fight in his first professional event.

The chief also is hoping for an impressive turnout to support the BPD, which will share half the proceeds with the promoters in this program.

“It’s the first time in history for an event like this to be held in Beeville,” Treviño said.

He hopes to make the fight night at least a yearly event, adding that entertainers during the intermission will sing in both English and Spanish for the fans attending.

General admission tickets are priced at $20 apiece and are on sale at the Dog and Bee Pub, all Pantry stores, Bee County Chamber of Commerce and CBS Grocery, as well as at the BPD office at City Hall.

Here’s hoping this event is a knockout for Serna, Treviño, the BPD, promoters, sponsors and everyone else involved in bringing this rare entertainment venue to town.
