The Coastal Bend College Cultural and Educational Programs Committee will present Emanuel Bean in a program on Friday, April 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gertrude R. Jones Fine Arts Auditorium on the Coastal Bend College campus.

Emanuel “Outspoken” Bean is a graduate of Prairie View A&M University. Emanuel “Outspoken” Bean began performing spoken-word poetry in 2005. He has earned spots on San Antonio’s and Houston Poetry’s Slam Team and created and coached Prairie View’s first slam team in 2008, winning the number one title in Region 12. He performs regionally and regularly hosts workshops at various Houston area public libraries, high schools, and universities ranging from leading a writing workshop to conducting an abstract performance.

He is currently head coach for Houston’s Youth Slam Meta-Four, a non-profit organization that uses reading, creative writing, poetry and performance techniques to increase literacy, instill critical thinking, intersect cultures and inspire leadership in today’s youth.

“A brilliant writer,” “phenomenal,” “…his words hit with the sustained force of a young James Earl Jones delivering King Lear,” “dynamic performer” are some of the words used to describe Bean.

A Texas Poet Laureate nominee and ranked 25th in the Individual World Poetry Slam 2012, Bean travels the country performing; he has worked with the Harris County Department of Education, Writers in the Schools, Houston’s Young Audiences: Arts for Learning and Texas Commission for the Arts, Houston Grand Opera, and others.

The program at CBC will be free and open to the public.
